The Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline is run in
partnership by Women's Aid and Refuge.
The Helpline is a member of Language Line and can provide access to an
interpreter for non-English speaking callers. The Helpline can also access
the BT Type Talk Service for deaf callers
The Helpline provides support, information and a listening ear to women
experiencing (or who have experienced) domestic abuse and to those seeking
help on a woman's behalf. Helpline staff will discuss the available
options and, if appropriate, refer callers on to refuges and other sources
of help and information. Our aim is to enable women to discuss options for
action and to empower them to make informed choices to change their life
and their children's lives.
If you, or someone you know is experiencing (or has experienced) physical,
emotional, psychological or sexual abuse in the home, the helpline can
give you support, help and information over the telephone for the cost of
a local call, wherever you are in the country. All calls are taken in the
strictest of confidence.
The Helpline currently receives over 68,000 calls per year. If all the
lines are busy there is a voice mail system that enables callers to leave
a message. The messages are checked at regular intervals throughout the
day and all calls are returned.
The Helpline is staffed 24hrs a day by fully trained Helpline support
workers and volunteers. All staff are women. During the course of a
call, the Helpline support worker will respond according to the caller's
needs.
