I’m Dr Sam
Barcham, a British Chartered
Counselling Psychologist. I
offer a warm, thoughtful space
where we can make sense of what
you are experiencing, understand
the patterns affecting your
life, and explore what needs to
change.
My work brings together more
than a decade of clinical
experience, doctoral research,
and lived experience. I support
adults with family estrangement,
adult and late-diagnosed
autism/ADHD, complex trauma,
relationship difficulties,
grief, anxiety, depression, and
burnout.
Family estrangement and
difficult family relationships
Family estrangement is a central
specialism of my practice and
the focus of my doctoral
research. I work with adult
children, parents, and
individuals affected by distance
from siblings or wider family,
as well as those still in
contact but finding their
relationships painful.
Our work might involve the grief
of losing a relationship with
someone who is still alive,
guilt about setting boundaries,
longstanding feelings of
rejection, or uncertainty about
whether to reconnect. You do not
need to have decided what you
want before coming to therapy.
We can explore that together,
with your safety, needs, and
circumstances guiding the work.
Complex trauma and the impact
of earlier relationships
Painful experiences can continue
to shape how you feel about
yourself and relate to others
long after they have ended. I
support people living with the
effects of emotional abuse,
chronic invalidation, disrupted
attachment, and difficult
childhood experiences.
Together, we can explore
patterns such as self-blame,
people-pleasing, fear of
conflict, or difficulty trusting
your own feelings. My approach
is collaborative and paced
carefully, drawing on relational
and trauma-informed therapy,
including EMDR where
appropriate.
Late-diagnosed autism,
identity, and burnout
I have a particular interest in
supporting late-diagnosed
autistic adults. Recognizing
that you are autistic can bring
relief, but it can also raise
difficult questions about
childhood, relationships,
identity, and years spent trying
to fit in.
I offer space to explore
masking, sensory and social
overwhelm, burnout, and the
impact of being misunderstood.
We can work towards a clearer
understanding of your needs and
ways of living that feel more
sustainable.
My approach is integrative: I
draw on different therapeutic
methods according to your needs.
There is room for uncertainty,
difficult feelings, and humour.
You do not need to arrive with
everything neatly explained.
I hold a Doctorate in
Counselling Psychology and
Psychotherapy, am a Chartered
Member of the British
Psychological Society, and am
registered with the UK Health
and Care Professions Council and
as a psychologue in France.
Sessions take place online via
Zoom. To enquire about working
