MY BACKGROUND

I initially trained and worked as a secondary school teacher. Thereafter I worked for 23 years in mental health, in both the voluntary and statutory sectors. For the past fifteen years I have been working as a psychotherapist in private practice; I have also worked as a supervisor helping to train others. I have taught on the Masters degree in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy programme at Sheffield University. For six years I was on the Clinical Committee of the Association for Group and Individual Psychotherapy (the organisation with which I trained); I have extensive experience of assessing people’s suitability for psychotherapy.

I have worked with people from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and also with people of different sexual orientations. Having lived in a number of different countries, I have experience of moving to a new country and understand the problems and difficulties that this may entail.

I have been living and working in France in the Midi Pyrenees area since 2004. I am bilingual in French and English and have experience of working as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in both languages.

WHAT IS PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a talking therapy for alleviating people’s suffering. People may experience emotions that they cannot understand or they may find themselves acting in ways that are detrimental to their wellbeing. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy provides a regular time and confidential setting in which the therapist and the client work together to address and understand the reasons for these difficulties. This process can enable people to gain a greater sense of freedom and autonomy in how they live their lives.
