Psychotherapy....for life's journeys

Relationship-based psychotherapy
The therapeutic relationship is the factor which has been shown to best determine the effectiveness of treatment in talk therapy. Therefore, when seeking a therapist to suit you, it would be best to find a therapist with whom you can well connect. In most cases, you won’t sense this until your first face-to-face session. But to assist you in knowing who I am, I offer you the following descriptions of my personality and my background, both personal and professional.
My story
My personal background includes many diverse experiences. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, USA. My father owned and operated a candy store. My mother suffered from a physical disability, polio, for most of her childhood, enduring many painful operations. Her mother died when she was only 11 years old. My mother and her three brothers were placed with foster parents because her father could not care for them properly. Her father was a raging alcoholic and died at an early age but not before causing serious physical and emotional harm to his wife and children.

I spent my first two years of college in a Catholic seminary preparing for the priesthood. I left the seminary after falling in love with my first wife. My first marriage to an Asian-American woman ended in divorce after 10 years, after three years of marital counselling. I moved to Switzerland in 2003 and married an Italian woman born and raised in Switzerland. I have been dealing with the adjustments of relocation, learning a new language, becoming a father of two step-children and grieving the loss of all that is familiar. And after all that, I can say that I have never been enjoying life more than I am right at this moment!
My therapy style is a melding of both my personality and effective therapeutic theory and practice. A list of my personality characteristics would look like this: caring, gentle, compassionate, supportive, non-judgmental, intuitive, optimistic, patient, thoughtful, intelligent, honest, trustworthy, dependable, open-minded, creative, flexible, playful, persistent and tenacious.

Professional Training
I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at the University of Notre Dame in 1980. I earned my Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University in 1985. I was licensed in Minnesota, USA as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in 1989 and as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in 2003. I am also licensed in Minnesota as School Social Worker. Currently, I am listed in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland Register of Complementary Practitioners as a Psychotherapist. Persons may verify this by calling the Direction général de la santé, Professionnels et institutions de santé, Unité des droits de pratique at +41(0)22 839 98 90.

Diverse Work Experience
I have worked with adolescents in residential psychiatric treatment, with frail elderly in a nursing home, with developmentally disabled adults in a group home, with orphaned and unaccompanied refugee children in foster families, with learning disabled middle school children, with refugees in Albania, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Bangladesh and with internally displaced persons in Indonesia after the tsunami of 2004.

Professional Interests
The direction that my therapeutic interests are moving at the moment are in the direction of the constantly emerging energy therapies, eco-psychology, transpersonal such as psychosynthesis, and biodynamic (body-mind) therapies. I am also interested in the sensory therapies of sound, light, aroma and colour.

Therapeutic Orientation
I focus on the particular needs and issues that clients bring to me and after the initial assessment we decide which mode of therapy may be best for them. Based on their situation, issues, age, personality, and therapy style preference, we design a unique treatment plan drawing from an array of therapy models. I use a mix of Cognitive Behavioural, Narrative, Psychodynamic, Reality Therapy (most often with children), Ecopsychology, and a Living in Process approach for addictions. The person-in-environment and systems models are always forefront in my mind, focusing on the individual's interaction with her/his multiple membership groups such as family, work, school, worship community, etc... My holistic approach deals with the health of the person's body, mind and spirit together as one integrated whole.

Therapeutic Techniques
I have training in Hypnosis and the Energy Psychology methods of Thought Field Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique and the Release Technique. I have 11 years of experience with breath work, energy work in natural surroundings and guided imagery. I use Strategic or Brief Therapy when clients want a certain number of sessions with specific goals and objectives.
