A safe place
I offer a safe, supportive, non-judgemental and confidential space,
in which you, as a client, can explore, express and reflect on any
emotional and relationship problems you might be having. I do not
believe in a 'one size fits all' approach and provide counselling
and psychotherapy to reflect this, by personally tailoring treatment
and sessions to meet your individual or couple needs.
Experience, training and qualifications
I have worked as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in a variety of
settings including a NHS Community Mental Health Team, and have
experience of working with a wide range of diagnoses and issues,
such as anxiety; depression, loss and grief; personality disorders;
family conflict; life changes and transitions; low self-esteem;
emotional, physical and sexual abuse; suicidal feelings and
self-harm; problem solving; relationship difficulties, separation
and divorce.
I am a professionally, qualified and experienced Psychotherapist,
registered with the Humanistic and Integrative College of the United
Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) with the Certificate in
Transactional Analysis (CTA). This is a worldwide qualification
conferred by the European Association of Transactional Analysis. I
have been awarded the European Certificate of Psychotherapy and am
registered with the European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP). I
also have a Master of Science in Transactional Analysis
Psychotherapy, a Clinical Diploma in Transactional Analysis
Psychotherapy and a Certificate in Further Counselling Skills.
My approach
Transactional Analysis (TA) is the main theoretical model I use and
offers a unique way of understanding our personality, behaviours and
relationships. It is an integrative approach, which combines
humanistic, cognitive behavioural and psychoanalytic concepts.
As a Psychotherapist and Counsellor, my aim is to create a
therapeutic relationship with clients, which is safe, supportive and
invites development, growth and change; as well as encourages
equality, mutuality and choice. To help create this type of
relationship, I base my practice on the philosophical assumptions of
TA. These are:
-
People are OK: everyone has
equal value and worth
-
Everyone has the capacity
to think about and assess their experiences
-
Decisions can be changed;
this is on the premise that everyone has the capacity to think
and can, within the confines of their culture and resources,
decide their own destiny.
TA provides a theory of:
-
how people function
psychologically
-
how people communicate and
why communication breakdowns occur
-
how decisions made in
childhood may continue to influence behaviour later in life
despite painful consequences. (Ref: Stewart & Joines 1997).
Drawing on TA and other
modalities, I work with individuals and couples to help them better
understand their internal world and relational patterns. Part of
this process is to facilitate people to make links and observations
between their past experiences and present difficulties. Through the
therapeutic process, people develop insight, establish a greater
understanding of 'why they do what they do', and discover
alternative ways of coping, or bringing about changes, in the way
they think, feel and behave.
I offer different levels of ongoing therapeutic support, from
time-limited focused counselling for specific issues, to open-ended
psychotherapy for long-term or recurrent difficulties with roots in
the past.
